Full rigid vellum with handwritten titles on the spine and colored edges; quarto, cm 21; 2 volumes bound in 1; pp. (44) 132 (4) 68 (4) 60 8 80 (4) 40 (4) 36, (8) 363; light stain at the upper edge of the introduction pages, overall a very good copy. Double red and black title page with woodcut printer’s mark; text on two columns, in Greek with Latin translation; 5 tipped in folded plates, of which 4 in red and black; woodcut initials and endings; musical scores; some rare handwritten notes. First – scarce – Elzevirian edition of this fundamental Meibom’s study of classical music. Well-known and esteemed philologist and librarian, he also prepared himself for the study of classical music, especially the Greek one. Considering the previous translations and treatments as incomplete and erroneous, he undertook the study of the history of Greek music to then go on to re-propose the most important books on the subject in this essay, taking care of the notes and the translation into Latin that integrate the original in Greek language. There are seven books, divided into two volumes, by Aristoxenus, Euclid, Nicomachus, Alypius, Gaudentius, Bacchio and Aristide. For this very important study, Meibom is remembered as one of the pioneers, as well as the greatest connoisseurs of the time, of the musicology inherent to the classical age
