PALATINO Giovambattista – Libro di M. Late 18th century full vellum, with handwritten title on the spine, fore-edges coloured in blue; octavo, cm 19,6 x 13,8; leaves (1b) (63) (1b); modern endpapers, title page reinforced on the back, at the inner edge of several leaves a paper reinforcement, a few little restores (not affecting the text) at sheets Aii and Cvi, some browned leaves, leaves Hiii and Hiv detached but present, little wormhole at the bottom edge from leaf Eiii ’til the end of the volume, some slight halos, edges of some leaves a bit short, lacking the last blank. Ex libris J-J. S. Bibliophile at the first endpaper, Author’s woodcut portrait on the title page, initials on woodcut, text in double fillet and in italics, several full and double pages calligraphy samples on woodcut, printer’s mark on Hvii verso. Scarce edition of the Palatino’s masterpiece, which is a real calligraphy and typography handbook. The letter styles are divided by countries and geographical zones, aside the further division by use and profession. This is the third edition (the first dated back to 1545) of the Blado’s new version, while the princeps was printed first in 1540. Remarkable also the part dedicated to the left-hand writing style and the suggestions how to write a cipher text
