PIO DI SAVOIA Ascanio – L’Andromeda di D. Ascanio Pio di Savoia. Cantata, e combattuta in Ferrara al carnevale dell’anno 1638 [BOUND WITH:] // Trattenimento festivo dato alle Signore Dame, e Nobiltà di Ferrara dall’Eminentiss.mo Sig. Card. Acciaioli Legato in occasione della solita Festa di San Maurelio Protettore della Città l’anno 1689 – 1639 / 1689. Coeval rustic cardboard, with raised bands at the hinges and traces of handwritten titles; folio, 32 cm; two works bound together; pp. 20 (Trattenimento); pp. (12) 132 (L’Andromeda); lack of about 5 cm on the spine, internal edges of the leaves of the first two gatherings of the Andromeda reinforced, 1 sheet detached from the body of the text and 6 sheets with slight/negligible tears, but completely intact, slightly loose binding, overall a very good copy. The booklet “Trattenimento” shows the printer’s mark with the episcopal coat of arms and decorated initials. The L’Andromeda shows a beautiful etched title page with a winged horse overlooking a source and a fountain, where the title of the work and the author of the subjects of the engravings are reported, namely the Ferrara architect and scenographer Francesco Guitti; woodcut headings and initials; text framed in double thread; 15 splendid plates, always etched, folded several times depicting the scenes of the show within the majestic architectural setting. First, sumptuous and rare commemorative edition. The Andromeda was composed by Pio of Savoy in 1638 on the occasion of the Carnival and the wedding of the Marquis Cornelio Bentivoglio and Costanza Sforza. The Andromeda was performed, to music by Michelangelo Rossi, in the Sala delle Comedie, inside the Palazzo Ducale. The engravings in the work testify to the grandiose scenography set up by Guitti.
