Full leather with golden titles and friezes on the spine, five raised bands, sprayed fore-edges; quarto, 26.3 cm; 2 vols.; pp. VIII 594 (but real 592); VIII 662; small lacks in the lower parts of the spines, slight imperfections in the hinges, very slight and sparse browning, but a very good copy with wide margins. Text in French; double red and black title pages with engraved letterpress; woodcut vignettes, drop caps and endings; 16 plates, even folded, with tables in and out of the text. First edition. Forbonnais, Francois-Louis Véron de, French economist (Le Mans 1722 – Paris 1800). The son of an entrepreneur, he was started to take care of the family business. In 1752 he moved to Paris, where he met the Enlightenment philosophers. He wrote various articles on economics for the Encyclopédie by D. Diderot and J.-B. D’Alembert. With the publication of the éléments du commerce (1754) and the Recherches et considérations sur les finances de France 1595-1721 (1758), he established himself as an economist. Advisor to the Minister of Finance E. de Silhouette (1759-63), he carried out some reforms of a neo-colonist style. In the following years he published numerous anti-Physiocratic writings.
